Course Offerings

The following electives are available for the 2019-2020 school year:

Sixth Grade Elective Descriptions

Sixth Grade Wheel Courses (At least four of these five courses will be offered on the Wheel. Students will be placed according to space.  Specific course order requests cannot be accommodated.)

Art – 1 Quarter (6) Wheel

This quarter-long course introduces students to a variety of media techniques.  These include drawing, painting, two- and three-dimensional design, and a number of hands-on experiences.  Students become acquainted with the elements and principles of art.

Culinary Arts – 1 Quarter (6) Wheel

This quarter-long course introduces students to practical food preparation and nutrition, safe work in the kitchen with a variety of culinary equipment, as well as several basic life skills (cooking simple meals, cleaning, using a washer and dryer, and working efficiently as a team).

Exploratory Foreign Language - 1 Quarter (6) Wheel

This quarter-long course will focus beginning level vocabulary and Spanish expressions.  Students learn by singing songs, playing games and creating fun projects. Concepts such as alphabet, calendar, numbers, colors, and greetings will be taught.

Leadership – 1 Quarter (6) Wheel

This quarter-long course provides students with tools necessary to succeed as strong leaders and positive role models in middle school and lays the foundation for high school leadership. Students will care for and connect with others through community service projects at school.

Exploratory Technology – 1 Quarter (6) Wheel

This quarter-long course is the gateway to technology at Vista del Mar Middle School.  In this class, students are introduced to Photoshop, coding, keyboarding, 3D Design and many other technologies and skills that they will build on in their 7th and 8th grade years.

Sixth Grade Year-Long Classes

Intermediate Band - Full Year (6)

This year-long course is open to all students with one year or less of playing experience on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Beginning students who wish to learn one of these instruments are encouraged to join as well. Students have a wide variety of instruments to choose from, and begin to learn the full range of their instruments, along with longer pieces of music. They will also collaborate with other ensembles on concerts throughout the year. Please note this class has some required activities that are both off-campus and outside of the normal school day.

Intermediate Orchestra – Full Year (6)

This year-long course is open to all students with two years or less of playing experience on a string instrument.  Beginning students who wish to learn one of these instruments are encouraged to join as well. Students perform string orchestra music as a large ensemble, as well as form small ensembles, and collaborate with other ensembles on concerts throughout the year. Please note this class has some required activities that are both off-campus and outside of the normal school day.

Introduction to Technology Processes - Full Year (6)

This year-long course will give students experience on keyboarding, graphic design, animation, coding, robotics and 3D printing. The students will learn to use Photoshop, Adobe Animate, TinkerCAD, iMovie, Lego EV3 Robots, as well as other programs.

Musical Theatre - Full Year (6-8)

Audition Required - This year-long course will allow students to perform in two musicals and a play, as they learn to sing, speak, dance, and act on stage. A willingness to perform in front of others and get out of personal comfort zone are a must for students in this class. Please note this class has many required activities that are both off-campus and outside of the normal school day. Enrollment is limited in this course.

 

Seventh/Eighth Grade Elective Descriptions

Art - 1 Semester (7/8)

This semester-long course is a basic exploratory course in the fundamentals of art, with experiences in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and art history. While acquiring new skills, each student develops a heightened awareness of his/her aesthetic abilities related to today's world and cultures of the past.

Culinary Arts – Semester (7/8)

This semester-long course features a hands-on approach to learning life-skills in an engaging, lively manner, utilizing weekly food labs and nutrition studies. In addition, students explore quick and yeast breads, homemade pizza, food service, table setting and etiquette, food and entertaining, meal planning, simple basic sewing, and participate in cooking competitions.

Exploratory Spanish – Semester (7/8)

This semester-long course will teach students the basics of the Spanish language through songs, games, videos and interactive activities.  This course will prepare students for success in Spanish 1 in 8th or 9th grade.

Forensic Science -  Semester (7/8)

The semester-long course is designed to explore the evidence seeking process utilized in crime scene investigations. Topics and labs may include: tool impressions; food/digestion chemistry; counterfeit money investigation; material fiber content evaluations; fingerprinting evaluations; glass fractures; handwriting analysis; shoe print impressions; fractures and bones injury comparison; blood and hair sample analysis; and typewriter/writing analysis. Many of these labs involve the use of chemically detecting evidence as well as solving mysteries.

 

Seventh/Eighth Grade Year-Long Classes

Advanced Band - (7/8)

This year-long course is open to all students with at least one year playing experience on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Students will perform concert band music as a large ensemble, as well as learn jazz and other small ensemble pieces, and collaborate with the Advanced Orchestra on Symphony Orchestra pieces. Please note this class has some required activities that are both off-campus and outside of the normal school day.

Advanced Orchestra - (7/8)

This year-long course is open to all students with at least two years playing experience on a string instrument. Students will perform string orchestra music as a large ensemble, as well as form small ensembles, and collaborate with the Advanced Band on Symphony Orchestra pieces. Please note this class has some required activities that are both off-campus and outside of the normal school day.

ASB (Associated Student Body) - (7/8)

Application and Interview Required -This year-long course teaches the principles and dynamics of leadership to elected/selected students. Student body officers will perform a variety of services throughout the school year such as planning a school budget, organizing student activities, conducting meetings, and learning leadership techniques. Please note this class has some required activities that are both off-campus, during summer and lunches, and outside of the normal school day.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) – (7th grade only)

Application and Interview Required -This year-long course will provide the AVID student with AVID trained tutors, teachers, and AVID team members, who will help the AVID student focus on college preparation: organization, writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading skills. CTE (Career Technical Education) Investigation Lab – (7/8)

This year-long course will explore 18 different 21st Century technologies including 3D printing and design, engineering, and media production.

PAL (Peer Assistance Leadership) - (7/8)

Application and Interview Required-This year-long course will teach students to be responsible for leading community activities on campus.  Many of these are lunch activities such as Red Ribbon Week (Drug Free), Blue Ribbon Week (Bully Free), and anti- tobacco activities.  In class, the students will role play and participate in activities to learn how to become a positive leader here at Vista del Mar Middle School.

 

Eighth Grade Year-Long Classes

Advanced Video Production / MTN - (8)

Application Required-This year-long course provides students with the skills needed to produce segments for our MTN33 production.  The students will learn skills in media journalism, such as storyboarding and scripting and will video and produce movies using iMovie, Movie Maker and/or Final Cut Pro.

Advanced Tech Processes - (8)

This year-long course enables students to further the skills learned in earlier technology courses.  Some of the areas covered will include game design using Scratch, photography techniques, advanced Photoshop skills, advanced robotics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D printing, Final Cut Pro Movie editing and stop motion animation

Cross-Age-Tutor(8)

This year-long course offers students an opportunity to work in an elementary classroom setting. Working with the teacher, the student will tutor selected students in the core subject areas. Students will be expected to maintain satisfactory academic and citizenship grades in their classes.

Department Aide(8)

This year-long course offers student an opportunity to assist middle school teachers within a department. Responsibilities may include organizing, filing, and peer tutoring.

Journalism/Yearbook - (8)

This year-long course will allow students to report on Vista del Mar Middle School’s most newsworthy events, people, and activities through a variety of media, including news articles, blogs, podcasts, and the school yearbook.  Curious and self-motivated students will particularly enjoy this class as it will allow them to write about topics of their choice, publish their work for an authentic audience, and leave the classroom with practical, real-world skills.

 Spanish 1 - (8)

This year-long course provides students will the beginning skills needed to read, write, speak and understand the Spanish language.  This year long course follows the same curriculum as Spanish 1 in high school.  Successful completion of Spanish 1 in 8th grade will allow students to get a head start and take Spanish 2 in 9th grade.
